New York Swank

Boutique hotels are rising in popularity in cities all over the world, but in New Zealand, “anti-chain” establishments have traditionally been seen more as a novelty than a serious option for an overnight stay. Inspired by chic designer hotels he discovered on a week-long vacation in Manhattan in 2000, Alan Blundell — a Kiwi, veteran architect and resident of Wellington — set out to change that perception. Certificate of Excellence

We are thrilled to announce that for the 3rd consecutive year, we have received a TripAdvisor® 'Certificate of Excellence' award. The accolade, which honours hospitality excellence, is given only to those that consistently achieve outstanding traveller reviews on TripAdvisor, worldwide. Establishments awarded the 'Certificate of Excellence' represent the upper echelon of all businesses listed on the website. When selecting Certificate of Excellence winners, TripAdvisor uses a proprietary algorithm to determine the honorees that takes into account reviews ratings. Businesses must maintain an overall TripAdvisor bubble rating of at least four out of five, volume and recency of reviews. Additional criteria include a business’ tenure and popularity ranking on the site. The Certificate of Excellence is a real source of pride for the small team at Ohtel and we’d like to thank all of our guests who took the time to complete a review. There is no greater seal of approval than being recognised by one’s customers. TripAdvisor® is the world's largest travel site*, enabling travellers to plan and have the perfect trip. TripAdvisor offers trusted advice from real travellers and a wide variety of travel choices and planning features. TripAdvisor branded sites make up the largest travel community in the world, reaching nearly 260 million unique monthly visitors**, and more than 150 million reviews and opinions covering more than 4 million accommodations, restaurants and attractions. Sleeping in at Ohtel.

We stayed at the Ohtel Hotel in the Oriental Bay – and that’s practically obligatory! The Ohtel Hotel is Boutique Design Hotel with a truly unique design style with its ‘Mid-Century’ furnishings that adorn the whole interior. Gourmet Wellington

Wellington isn't just NZ's political and cultural capital - it's gourmet top dog too, with more restaurants per capita than the Big Apple, a caffeine scene to make Seattle blanch, world-class wineries and artisan producers aplenty. It looks good too, draped across lush hills fronted by distinctive Cook Strait bays. So come on, fill your boots...The Sunday Times UK Travel

Cool is a difficult status to attain. Don’t they say, anyone who says they’re cool generally isn’t? And while we all pretend not to be seduced by marketing — “Just do it”, we’re encouraged; “Because you’re worth it”, we’re told — maybe there is a little truth in what’s being spruiked about Wellington.Voyeur Magazine

What are the best beachside hotels in Wellington?

One of the best is Ohtel, a boutique establishment on Oriental Parade that has only 10 rooms. So you'll never feel like you're just another nameless guest shoe-horned into an impersonal chain hotel. Stroll across the road and you'll be on Wellington's main promenade where you'll join dog walkers, joggers and those out enjoying the beautiful walk and eating ice creams. Five minutes the other way and you'll be at Te Papa and Wellington's principal entertainment precinct with theatres, restaurants and clubs.Forbes Travel Guide

A weekend in Wellywood

eing located across the Tasman and all, Wellington isn’t our typical Out of Towner. But given the fact that it only takes as long to fly to New Zealand’s stunning capital city than as it does to drive to, say, High Country Victoria, it’s as good a weekend destination as any. So over a recent long weekend, we spent a few days exploring Wellington. It’s a beautiful city, this one. While small and rather quaint, you can cover a lot of ground in a short time and there are countless little treasures in this Kiwi corner. Peter Jackson thinks so too, which is why he’s in town filming The Hobbit at the moment and has permanent offices in the city (the reason Wellington has become affectionately known as Wellywood)... Flying into Wellington, New Zealand’s capital, the North Island seems to materialize from the sea like some suddenly-formed Eden, the lush flora and milk-white coastline offset by water that somehow appears extra blue, and sailboats cutting frothy wakes just beneath the plane. Wellington without Bilbo: hobbit-free New Zealand haunts

Tourists heading to New Zealand this winter who are not fans of JRR Tolkien may feel a little like they've entered a parallel universe. For passengers travelling with Air New Zealand the confusion will begin just moments after take off when they are welcomed on board a flight, not to Wellington but to the "Middle of Middle Earth", as the city now styles itself. The theme will continue with the on-board safety video "imparting a story of safety" with a message from Gandalf - aka the captain. Arriving at Wellington airport, the first thing bleary-eyed and jet-lagged, tourists will set their eyes upon is a giant Gollum looming over the cafe area. All this before they've even reached the city proper. Once there they may find themselves using commemorative "Hobbit" currency and putting Hobbit stamps on their postcards home. Visitors to Wellington whose trip coincides with the red-carpet world premiere of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on 28 November may well spot a star or two. At the very least they will be able to pick up a leather pouch or a piece of Hobbit-inspired jewellery at the Hobbit Artisan Market (24-28 November) where artists including glassblowers, leather workers, jewellers and sculptors will be displaying and selling their work. The cool capital of Wellington

THE clock ticks over to 3pm and the sound of a radio news update cuts through the wintry sunlight. The news announcer whips through the local news and then adds, "across the ditch" before dispensing with a few Australian current affairs headlines. The routine hourly news - which is playing in the car as we leisurely drive through the lush New Zealand countryside highlights a startling disparity. While Kiwis are acutely aware of Australians' lives, we know little of what's going on with our southern neighbours. Bar the rugby, the occasional political story and, natural disasters we hear little day to day of what New Zealanders are up to.... Read more: Leo -

The location and rooms are fantastic and make my regular stays in Wellington easy..

'It's fitting to have Wellingtonian Al Brown on our latest edition, an image we photographed in Wellington just before Christmas at Lyall Bay, and our first issue to be placed in all the rooms at Ohtel, Oriental Parade. Since then I have stayed while we have photographed the Royal NZ Ballet in the capital city, and also for meetings as MiNDFOOD has just signed on as the media partner for Wellington On A Plate, the best food festival in New Zealand that is held during August. I'm lucky to have found Ohtel as the location and rooms are fantastic and make my regular stays in Wellington easy with walking distance to everywhere I need to get to and some of the best restaurants on the doorstep. Wellington will be seeing much more of MiNDFOOD in 2013. Also I have just realised that Ohtel and MiNDFOOD has exactly the same birthday, we both launch five years ago on March 8th, 2008, that has to be a lucky date.'Michael McHugh - Editor

Insider's Guide

The differences between Wellington and Auckland are a bit like the differences between Melbourne and Sydney. While its flashy northern sister is preoccupied by looks, Wellington is a thriving bohemian city filled with tiny cafés who take coffee so seriously its become a religion. It’s a little bit Portland; a little bit San Francisco; but then, Wellington really has a step and style all its own, born from talented local designers and the need to cover up against that occasional gale that howls down Cuba Street. Big ticket New Zealand designers such as Karen Walker, Starfish and Zambesi all have stores here, but also take some time to discover the little shops hidden down laneways celebrating the work of young Wellington designers. Vintage stores offer pristine items not easily found in Australia for reasonable prices, and there are great markets as well. Time Out

Classy yet modern place to crash...

During my recent visit in New Zealand, I’ve been delighted by great natural scenery and interesting architecture. This was particularly true in Wellington, its underrated capital. Seriously, if you ever go to New Zealand, do not miss Wellington where Maori and imperial cultures mix very… well (yes, I love alliteration). To do justice to Wellington, you will need at least a couple of days in town and therefore a nice, classy yet modern place to crash.
